Changing a Business's Storefront Door Closure

Updated: May 28, 2024

Part 1: Identifying the Problem

One of our clients faced a significant issue with their storefront door: it was slamming shut whenever customers entered the store. This problem posed several risks, including:

  • Stress on the Door and Frame: Repeated slamming can cause stress to the door, side lites, and transom, leading to potential damage.

  • Structural Issues: The added stress can unhinge the door, loosen the transom's mullion, or even shatter the side lites or storefront door glass.

To address this issue, we were called to Madison Square Garden to fix their door closures. The bottom picture below shows a 450 lb herculite door, which needed to be removed entirely from the store so we could swap out the concealed door closure.

Part 2: Replacing the Door Closure

‘Out with the old, in with the new.’ This is an older model Rixon concealed door closure. Rixon is known for manufacturing some of the most durable, long-lasting door closures on the market. However, this particular hardware is rare and hard to find.

Fortunately for our client, we maintain a comprehensive stock of all necessary hardware. This allowed us to diagnose and repair the storefront door much sooner than anyone else could.

Steps Taken:

  1. Remove the Old Door Closure: Carefully removed the door to access the concealed closure.

  2. Install the New Closure: Replaced the old Rixon model with a new one from our inventory.

  3. Reinstall the Door: Ensured the door was securely reinstalled and properly aligned.

Benefits of Proper Door Closures

Replacing the faulty door closure with a reliable one offers several benefits:

  • Enhanced Safety: Prevents the door from slamming shut, reducing the risk of injury to customers and employees.

  • Prolonged Door Life: Reduces stress on the door and frame, extending their lifespan.

  • Improved Customer Experience: A smoothly operating door improves the overall customer experience when entering the store.

Conclusion

By swiftly addressing the door closure issue, we were able to protect the structural integrity of our client's storefront and enhance the safety and experience for their customers.
