This type of glass is the top choice for high-end jewelry and clothing stores. The glass is bonded using ultra-violet (UV) adhesive, which creates an incredibly strong and permanent bond. Here’s a detailed look at the process:

What is UV Bonding?

UV bonding is the process of joining two pieces of glass using a UV bonding adhesive. This method can be applied to various types of glass, including tempered, laminated, and annealed plate glass. The adhesive’s viscosity must be carefully chosen based on the glass type. One of the greatest advantages of UV bonding is its rapid curing rate, which also poses a challenge because it allows little to no time for adjustments. Achieving perfect angles and dealing with any discrepancies in glass measurements requires meticulous precision, as even a 1/64th discrepancy can be problematic.

The Process

1. Cleaning the Glass:

• Thoroughly clean the glass using an alcohol-based glass cleaner and extremely fine, non-abrasive steel wool. Contrary to common belief, the steel wool will not scratch the glass.

• Wear gloves to avoid leaving fingerprints, which can ruin the bonding process.

• Heat the glass to 155°F to remove all oils and contaminants. Heating is essential for ensuring a strong bond.

1. Dry Run:

• Perform a test run by setting up adjustable suction cups. This step involves doing a full dry run to ensure all pieces fit perfectly and adjustments can be made before applying the adhesive.

Key Considerations

• Precision: The process requires precise measurements and perfect alignment. Any slight miscalculation can lead to issues in the final product.

• Speed: UV bonding cures quickly, leaving no room for errors or adjustments once the adhesive is applied.

• Strength: The UV adhesive creates an extremely strong bond, making disassembly impossible without breaking the glass.
